Hairy Dragonfly at Wicken Fen - a sad sight

  • By Steve Houghton

I just thought I'd share this photo with you all. I've spent a very long day today at Wicken fen, Cambridgeshire, trying to photograph adult Hairy dragonflies, with little success I'm sorry to say, apart from this poor female that I found in the reeds by one of the drains that cross the fen.

I couldn't be sure what had happened to her, wether it was a pre-emergent deformation or damage caused whilst she was a teneral, drying out, ie: battered by wind.

Whatever the cause it was a sad sight to see her just perched there in full adult colouration with a pair of fused, totally useless wings, just waiting to die!

Nature can be very cruel sometimes.
